Fill in for signer is a block on the Review step that takes a step out of filling in a document yourself. It offers two choices: Pre-fill, covered here, and Complete for signer. Pre-fill is worth turning on any time you are completing boxes before sending, and worth understanding, because it also turns itself off.
What it changes
Without it: clicking a text box opens a menu asking what you want to do there.
With it: clicking a text box opens it for typing straight away, and clicking a checkbox marks it with an X. No menu, no extra choice.
Turning it on
It lives in the Fill in for signer block, in the left panel of the Review step. Switch on Pre-fill. The switch turns orange, and from then on Click assumes you are filling the document in.
Click the switch again to turn it off. Switching on Complete for signer turns it off too, because only one of the two can be on at a time.
On a narrower screen, the block is not in the left panel. Click Fill in at the top of the Review step instead and switch on Pre-fill there. While it is on, the button reads Pre-fill on.
It switches itself off when you place a new tag
This surprises people, and it is deliberate. If you place a brand-new text box or checkbox on the document, Pre-fill turns off by itself.
The reason is that the two things are different jobs: placing a new field means you are building the document, not filling it in. Click drops out of Pre-fill so your next click does not immediately start typing into the tag you have just placed.
Moving or copying a tag that already exists does not turn it off â only adding a new one does. If you are alternating between placing fields and filling them, expect to switch it back on.
